Nu Biome vs Probiotics: What's the Difference?
Compartilhar
Pharmanex® Nu Biome® is often described as a probiotic. It isn't one. Here's how prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics differ, and where Nu Biome fits.
The Three "Biotics"
- Probiotics are live bacteria taken to add to the bacteria in your gut.
- Prebiotics are fibers that feed the beneficial bacteria you already have.
- Postbiotics are beneficial compounds produced by bacteria, or inactivated bacteria that deliver those compounds.
Where Nu Biome Fits
Nu Biome combines two of the three: a prebiotic (XOS) and a heat-treated postbiotic (BPL1, a strain of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis). It contains no live bacteria, so it is not a probiotic.
Nu Biome vs a Probiotic Supplement
- Live bacteria: a probiotic contains them; Nu Biome doesn't.
- Approach: a probiotic adds bacteria; Nu Biome feeds your existing bacteria and supplies the compounds they produce.
- Format: probiotics usually come as capsules; Nu Biome is a flavored drink mix.
- Bloating evidence: Nu Biome was tested in a Nu Skin-commissioned study on bloating after meals.
Can You Take Both?
If you already take a probiotic, particularly one your doctor recommended, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding Nu Biome.
Which Is Right for You?
If post-meal bloating is your main concern and you'd rather drink your supplement than swallow it, Nu Biome is worth a look. Read our Nu Biome review for what the study found.
